linseed

Flax (also known as common flax or linseed), with the binomial name Linum usitatissimum, is a member of the genus Linum in the family Linaceae. It is a food and fiber crop that is grown in cooler regions of the world. The textiles made from flax are known in the West as linen, and traditionally used for bed sheets, underclothes and table linen. The oil is known as linseed oil. In addition to referring to the plant itself, the word "flax" may refer to the unspun fibers of the flax plant. The plant species is known only as a cultivated plant, and appears to have been domesticated just once from the wild species Linum bienne, called pale flax.

Gemeiner Lein (Linum usitatissimum), auch Saat-Lein oder Flachs genannt, ist eine alte Kulturpflanze, die zur Faser- (Faserlein) und zur Ölgewinnung (Öllein, Leinsamen, Leinöl) angebaut wird. Er ist eine Art aus der Gattung Lein (Linum) in der Familie der Leingewächse (Linaceae) und die einzige Lein-Art, deren Anbau eine wirtschaftliche Bedeutung hat. Es gibt mehrere Convarietäten sowie etliche Sorten. In der Praxis wird nach der Hauptverwendung Faserlein und Öllein unterschieden.

Le lin est une dicotylédone autogame qui appartient à la famille des Linacées et au genre Linum. À travers le monde, il existe environ 200 espèces de lin dont la plupart sont sauvages et pérennes. Depuis des milliers d’années, (la plus ancienne fibre au monde est celle du lin trouvée dans la grotte de Dzudzuana en Géorgie remontant à ans), les peuples d’Asie Centrale, les Égyptiens, les Grecs et les Gaulois ont favorisé le développement d’une espèce nommée « usitatissimum ». Ce lin cultivé (Linum usitatissimum L.), très différent de ses ancêtres, est une espèce annuelle. Suivant les critères de sélection, elle comprend des variétés dont la production principale est la fibre et d'autres la graine.

Len zwyczajny (Linum usitatissimum L.) – gatunek rośliny jednorocznej należący do rodziny lnowatych (Linaceae). Pochodzi z Bliskiego Wschodu. W Polsce jest rośliną uprawną, czasami dziczeje. Status gatunku w polskiej florze: ergazjofigofit, efemerofit.
