Logistics is generally the detailed organization and implementation of a complex operation. In a general business sense, logistics is the management of the flow of things between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet requirements of customers or corporations. The resources managed in logistics can include physical items, such as food, materials, animals, equipment and liquids, as well as abstract items, such as time and information. The logistics of physical items usually involves the integration of information flow, material handling, production, packaging, inventory, transportation, warehousing, and often security.

Die Logistik beschäftigt sich mit Transport, Lagerung und Umschlag von Gütern und Personen. Es handelt sich dabei sowohl um einen Wirtschaftszweig, eine Wissenschaft, als auch um einen Organisationsbereich. Die Logistikbranche besteht zu einem großen Teil aus Spediteuren und Transporteuren und wurde durch die sogenannte Globalisierung seit Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts immer bedeutender. In Deutschland ist sie inzwischen die drittgrößte Branche. Wirtschafts- und Ingenieurwissenschaften beschäftigten sich selbstständig mit der Logistik. Die entsprechenden Teildisziplinen sind aber inzwischen zu einer neuen interdisziplinären Wissenschaft zusammengewachsen. In Organisationen gibt es oft eigenständige Bereiche die sich mit der Logistik beschäftigen. Im Militär ist dies die Logistiktruppe und in Unternehmen Logistikabteilungen mit unterschiedlichem Aufgabenumfang.

Logistiek is het organiseren, plannen, besturen en uitvoeren van de goederenstroom, en de wetenschap hierover. Dit begint vanaf de ontwikkeling en inkoop van een product, via productie en distributie naar de eindafnemer, en heeft als doel om tegen optimale kosten en kapitaalgebruik te voldoen aan de behoeften van de markt. Tevens rekent men ook de omgekeerde goederenstroom reverse logistics tot het domein logistiek. Er is een sterke relatie met het begrip Supply chain management (SCM).

La logistique est l'activité qui a pour objet de gérer les flux physiques, et les données (informatives, douanières et financières) s'y rapportant, dans le but de mettre à disposition les correspondant à des besoins (plus ou moins) déterminés en respectant les conditions économiques et légales prévues, le degré de qualité de service attendu, les conditions de sécurité et de sûreté réputées satisfaisantes.

Logistyka – proces planowania, realizowania i kontrolowania sprawnego i efektywnego ekonomicznie przepływu surowców, materiałów, wyrobów gotowych oraz odpowiedniej informacji z punktu pochodzenia do punktu konsumpcji w celu zaspokojenia wymagań klienta. Działania logistyczne mogą obejmować (choć nie muszą się do nich ograniczać): obsługę klienta, prognozowanie popytu, przepływ informacji, kontrolę zapasów, czynności manipulacyjne, realizowanie zamówień, czynności reparacyjne i zaopatrywanie w części, lokalizację zakładów produkcyjnych i składów, procesy zaopatrzeniowe, pakowanie, obsługę zwrotów, gospodarowanie odpadami, transport i składowanie.
