Lymph is the fluid that circulates throughout the lymphatic system. The lymph is formed when the interstitial fluid (the fluid which lies in the interstices of all body tissues) is collected through lymph capillaries. It is then transported through lymph vessels to lymph nodes before emptying ultimately into the right or the left subclavian vein, where it mixes back with blood.

Das lymphatische System (lat.-anat. Systema lymphaticum, Systema lymphoideum, Systema lymphaceum, Systema lymphare oder Lymphsystem; Lymphe = „Körperwasser“, zu lat. , ‚klares Wasser‘) ist ein Teil des Abwehrsystems (Immunsystems) der Wirbeltiere gegen Krankheitserreger, Fremdpartikel und krankhaft veränderte Körperbestandteile (z. B. Tumorzellen). Es gliedert sich in die lymphatischen Organe und das Lymphgefäßsystem. Das Lymphgefäßsystem hat neben der Funktion im Abwehrsystem auch eine Bedeutung beim Flüssigkeitstransport und steht in enger Beziehung zum Blutkreislauf.

Het lymfevaatstelsel of lymfevatenstelsel, ook wel het lymfestelsel, lymfatisch stelsel, lymfatisch systeem of systema lymphacaeum genoemd, is het geheel van organen, vaten en weefsels in het lichaam van gewervelde dieren waarin zich hoofdzakelijk lymfe en lymfocyten bevinden en getransporteerd worden.

Le système lymphatique associe deux notions :

• d'une part un réseau, à sens unique, de vaisseaux lymphatiques (dit réseau lymphatique), dont les vaisseaux naissent dans les différents tissus du corps pour rejoindre les ganglions, qui permettent la circulation et le nettoyage de la lymphe et dans une certaine mesure la clairance de particules insolubles ;
• d'autre part tous les organes où se trouvent de grandes quantités de globules blancs : les ganglions lymphatiques, des tissus lymphoïdes associés aux muqueuses, de la moelle osseuse, ainsi que d'organes tels que la rate, le thymus.
  Ces tissus font partie du tissu lymphoïde à l'exception de la moelle osseuse.

Układ limfatyczny lub inaczej układ chłonny (łac. systema lymphaticum) – otwarty układ naczyń i przewodów, którymi płynie jeden z płynów ustrojowych – limfa, która bierze swój początek ze śródmiąższowego przesączu znajdującego się w tkankach. Układ naczyń chłonnych połączony jest z układem krążenia krwi. Oprócz układu naczyń chłonnych w skład układu limfatycznego wchodzą także narządy i tkanki limfatyczne. Najważniejszą funkcją układu chłonnego jest obrona przed zakażeniami oraz cyrkulacja płynów ustrojowych. Limfa porusza się w naczyniach limfatycznych za pomocą mięśni.
