Machining is any of various processes in which a piece of raw material is cut into a desired final shape and size by a controlled material-removal process. The processes that have this common theme, controlled material removal, are today collectively known as subtractive manufacturing, in distinction from processes of controlled material addition, which are known as additive manufacturing. Exactly what the "controlled" part of the definition implies can vary, but it almost always implies the use of machine tools (in addition to just power tools and hand tools).

Zerspanen (trennend), nach DIN 8580 auch Spanen (formgebend) genannt, bezeichnet alle mechanischen Bearbeitungsverfahren, bei denen das Material in die gewünschte Form gebracht wird, indem überflüssiges Material in Form von Spänen abgetragen wird. Die Fertigungsverfahren der Gruppe Spanen sind in Deutschland in der DIN 8589 definiert. Zu den wichtigsten und bekanntesten Verfahren gehören Drehen, Fräsen, Bohren, Sägen und Schleifen. Das Spanen gehört zusammen mit dem Zerteilen, dem Abtragen und weiteren Gruppen, zur Hauptgruppe des Trennens.

Verspanen is de term voor alle vormen van materiaalbewerking waarbij door middel van bepaald hand- of machinegereedschap materiaaldelen worden weggenomen waarbij spanen ontstaan. Hierbij neemt de massa af en verandert de oorspronkelijke vorm blijvend.

Le principe de l'usinage est d'enlever de la matière de façon à donner à la pièce brute la forme et les dimensions voulues, à l'aide d'une machine-outil. Par cette technique, on obtient des pièces d'une grande précision.
