Metabolism (from metabole, "change") is the set of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of living organisms. These enzyme-catalyzed reactions allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments. The word metabolism can also refer to all chemical reactions that occur in living organisms, including digestion and the transport of substances into and between different cells, in which case the set of reactions within the cells is called intermediary metabolism or intermediate metabolism.

Als Stoffwechsel oder Metabolismus ( metabolismós „Stoffwechsel“, mit lateinischer Endung -us) bezeichnet man die Gesamtheit der chemischen Prozesse in Lebewesen. Dabei wandelt der Organismus chemische Stoffe in Zwischenprodukte (Metaboliten) und Endprodukte um. Diese biochemischen Vorgänge dienen dem Aufbau und der Erhaltung der Körpersubstanz (Baustoffwechsel) sowie der Energiegewinnung für energieverbrauchende Aktivitäten (Energiestoffwechsel) und damit der Aufrechterhaltung der Körperfunktionen. Wesentlich für den Stoffwechsel sind Enzyme, die chemische Reaktionen beschleunigen und lenken (katalysieren).

Stofwisseling of metabolisme (uit het Grieks: μεταβολισμός "metabolismos" = verandering of omzetting) is het geheel van biochemische processen die plaatsvinden in cellen en organismen. Enzymen spelen bij de omzettingen een centrale rol. Er wordt gewoonlijk onderscheid gemaakt tussen de opbouw van stoffen met gebruik van energie (anabolisme) en de afbraak van complexere stoffen waarbij energie weer vrijkomt (katabolisme).

Le métabolisme est l'ensemble des réactions chimiques qui se déroulent au sein d'un être vivant pour lui permettre notamment de se maintenir en vie, de se reproduire, de se développer et de répondre aux stimulus de son environnement. Certaines de ces réactions chimiques se déroulent en dehors des cellules de l'organisme, comme la digestion ou le transport de substances entre cellules. Cependant, la plupart de ces réactions ont lieu dans les cellules elles-mêmes et constituent le métabolisme intermédiaire.
