Meteorology is the interdisciplinary scientific study of the atmosphere. Studies in the field stretch back millennia, though significant progress in meteorology did not occur until the 18th century. The 19th century saw modest progress in the field after observing networks formed across several countries. It wasn't until after the development of the computer in the latter half of the 20th century that significant breakthroughs in weather forecasting were achieved.

Meteorologie ( meteorología „Untersuchung der überirdischen Dinge oder Himmelskörper“) ist die Lehre der physikalischen und chemischen Vorgänge in der Atmosphäre und beinhaltet auch deren bekannteste Anwendungsgebiete – die Wettervorhersage und die Klimatologie.

Meteorologie of weerkunde is de studie van het weer; de condities van de atmosfeer die in ons dagelijks leven een belangrijke rol spelen. Zij houdt zich vooral bezig met het actuele weer, het historische weer en de weersverwachtingen, zowel algemene als meer specifieke voor bijvoorbeeld landbouw, luchtvaart en watersport. De nauw verwante klimatologie bestudeert het klimaat.

La météorologie est une science qui a pour objet l'étude des phénomènes atmosphériques tels que les nuages, les précipitations ou le vent dans le but de comprendre comment ils se forment et évoluent en fonction des paramètres mesurés tels que la pression, la température et l'humidité. Le mot vient du grec ancien  qui désigne les particules en suspension dans l'atmosphère et veut dire « discours » ou « connaissance ».
