A metric is a measure for quantitatively assessing, controlling or selecting a person, process, event, or institution, along with the procedures to carry out measurements and the procedures for the interpretation of the assessment in the light of previous or comparable assessments.

The metric system is an internationally agreed decimal system of measurement. It was originally based on the and the introduced by the First French Republic in 1799, but over the years the definitions of the metre and the kilogram have been refined, and the metric system has been extended to incorporate many more units. Although a number of variants of the metric system emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the term is now often used as a synonym for "SI" or the "International System of Units"—the official system of measurement in almost every country in the world.

Ein metrisches Einheitensystem, kurz metrisches System, ist ein Einheitensystem mit dem Meter als Basiseinheit für die Länge einer Strecke. Anders als bei vielen anderen Einheitensystemen werden im metrischen Einheitensystem unhandlich große oder kleine Angaben strikt als dezimale Vielfache oder dezimale Bruchteile angegeben. Dazu dient ein System von Vorsätzen für Maßeinheiten.

De invoering van het metriek decimaal stelsel was een van de belangrijkste verwezenlijkingen van de Franse Revolutie en het napoleontisch tijdperk. Vóór de invoering van het metrieke stelsel werden verschillende maten gebruikt in verschillende landen en zelfs in verschillende delen van een land. Zo verving de meter oudere maten als de duim, de el en de voet.

Metrická soustava je soustava základních fyzikálních velicin, založená na jednotce 1 metr nebo jejích násobcích. Byla navržena v roce 1790 ve Francii. Postupne bylo v historii používáno nekolik mírne odlišných metrických soustav, v soucasnosti je mezinárodne používána soustava SI.
