microcomputer

A microcomputer is a small, relatively inexpensive computer with a microprocessor as its central processing unit (CPU). It includes a microprocessor, memory, and input/output (I/O) facilities. Microcomputers became popular in the 1970s and 80s with the advent of increasingly powerful microprocessors. The predecessors to these computers, mainframes and minicomputers, were comparatively much larger and more expensive (though indeed present-day mainframes such as the IBM System z machines use one or more custom microprocessors as their CPUs). Many microcomputers (when equipped with a keyboard and screen for input and output) are also personal computers (in the generic sense).

Mikrocomputer (Mikrorechner) sind Computer, die kompakter als Großrechner und Minirechner sind und von einer einzelnen Person bedient werden können. Der Begriff ist heute meistens assoziiert mit der ersten Welle der 8-Bit-Heim- und Bürocomputer.

Een microcomputer is een computer die een microprocessor als centrale verwerkingseenheid (CPU) gebruikt. De term is eigenlijk verouderd, en diende om onderscheid te maken tussen mainframes, minicomputers (die naar huidige maatstaven ook nog vrij fors waren) en microcomputers, waarbij de gehele CPU op een enkele chip zat. De term betekent zeer kleine computer en werd voor het eerst gebruikt door Isaac Asimov in het korte verhaal De Stervende Nacht (gepubliceerd in 1956 in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction).

La micro-informatique désigne ce qui a rapport avec les micro-ordinateurs. Ce dernier terme fut introduit par les développeurs du Micral (REE), pour désigner dans leurs brevets le premier ordinateur ayant un microprocesseur comme unité centrale, possibilité ouverte par les progrès en matière de circuits intégrés.

Un microcomputer o microelaboratore (negli anni settanta abbreviato anche micro) è un computer generalmente dotato di un singolo microprocessore (µP), di costo abbastanza limitato da poter essere acquistato e utilizzato da un singolo utente, con un ingombro generalmente ridotto.
