Midsummer, also known as St John's Day, or Litha, is the period of time centred upon the summer solstice, and more specifically the Northern European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice or take place on a day between June 19 and June 25 and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures. The Christian Church designated June 24 as the feast day of the early Christian martyr St John the Baptist, and the observance of St John's Day begins the evening before, known as St John's Eve.

Als Mittsommerfest werden die Feierlichkeiten zur Sommersonnenwende bezeichnet. In den skandinavischen Ländern sowie im Baltikum, wo die Nächte zu dieser Jahreszeit kaum dunkel werden („Weiße Nächte“), sind die Bräuche besonders lebendig.

Het midzomerfeest verwijst naar de zomerzonnewende op 21 juni en de voor-Christelijke feestelijkheden die hiermee gepaard gaan in voornamelijk Noord-Europa. Oorspronkelijk werd dit feest gevierd op 24 juni, dus drie dagen na de feitelijke zonnewende.

C'est une fête majeure dans les cultures scandinaves et baltes. En Suède, son importance est telle qu'il a été envisagé de déplacer la fête nationale le jour précédant les célébrations de (nom suédois).

La fête de la Saint-Jean d'été, traditionnellement accompagnée de grands feux de joie, est la fête de Jean le Baptiste, le 24 juin.

Midsommar är en högtid som firas kring sommarsolståndet. Ursprunget till midsommar är förkristet, men kyrkan har valt att fira Johannes Döparens födelse vid samma tidpunkt. Idag firas midsommar i Sverige med dans kring midsommarstången och inte sällan med sill och färskpotatis på matbordet.
