In vertebrates, mucus ( ; adjectival form: "mucous") is a slippery secretion produced by, and covering, mucous membranes. Mucous fluid is typically produced from cells found in mucous glands. Mucous cells secrete products that are rich in glycoproteins and water. Mucous fluid may also originate from mixed glands, which contain both serous and mucous cells. It is a viscous colloid containing antiseptic enzymes (such as lysozyme), immunoglobulins, inorganic salts, proteins such as lactoferrin, and glycoproteins known as mucins that are produced by goblet cells in the mucous membranes and submucosal glands. This mucus serves to protect epithelial cells (the lining of the tubes) in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital, visual, and auditory systems in mammals; the epidermis in amphibians; and the gills in fish. A major function of this mucus is to protect against infectious agents such as fungi, bacteria and viruses. The average human nose produces about a litre of mucus per day. Much more mucus is produced in the gastrointestinal tract.

Schleim (lat. „mucus“) ist eine zähflüssige organische Absonderung, insbesondere von Schleimhäuten, die üblicherweise dem Schutz der Organoberfläche vor Austrocknung, Fremdpartikeln oder Abrieb dient. Schleim kann auch der Einhüllung und Abkapselung von unerwünschten Fremdkörpern dienen. Strukturbestimmende Hauptbestandteile des Schleims sind die Mucine.

El moco (del latín mucus), es una sustancia viscosa de origen biológico. Es producido como método de protección de superficies en el ser vivo, contra la deshidratación (pulmón), ataque bioquímico (mucosidad del estómago), bacteriológico (mucosidad respiratoria) o simplemente como lubricante (esófago, colon). El moco (o mucosidad) es producido por un tipo especializado de células, las células caliciformes, en el retículo endoplasmático y en el aparato de Golgi. Segregado por las membranas mucosas, está compuesto por una mezcla de glicoproteínas y de proteoglicanos, tiene altas concentraciones de anticuerpos y varias funciones protectoras en el organismo. El moco, producido por una célula caliciforme, es secretado a la luz del túbulo en cuestión por exocitosis y diluido con agua con el fin de revestir el epitelio expuesto a acciones nocivas presentes en los tubos digestivos o respiratorios. Una de sus funciones más importantes consiste en mantener húmedo el epitelio (en particular el de las vías aéreas) y evitar su desecación.
