In biology, a mutation is a permanent alteration of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism, virus, or extrachromosomal DNA or other genetic elements. Mutations result from damage to DNA which is not repaired, errors in the process of replication, or from the insertion or deletion of segments of DNA by mobile genetic elements. Mutations may or may not produce discernible changes in the observable characteristics (phenotype) of an organism. Mutations play a part in both normal and abnormal biological processes including: evolution, cancer, and the development of the immune system, including junctional diversity.

Als Mutation (lat. mutare „ändern, verwandeln“) wird in der Biologie eine dauerhafte Veränderung des Erbgutes bezeichnet. Die Veränderung betrifft zunächst das Erbgut nur einer Zelle, wird aber an deren Tochterzellen weitergegeben. Bei mehrzelligen Tieren unterscheidet man Keimbahn-Mutationen, die an die Nachkommen weitergegeben werden können, von somatischen Mutationen, die nicht in Keimzellen, sondern nur in anderen Geweben vorliegen. Ein Organismus mit einer Mutation wird auch als Mutant oder Mutante bezeichnet.

Mutations —en español: Mutaciones— es el sexto álbum de estudio del músico estadounidense Beck, lanzado el 3 de noviembre de 1998 a través de DGC/Bong Load Custom Records. En este disco Beck uniría fuerzas con el famoso productor de Radiohead, entre otros, Nigel Godrich, el resultado fue un disco mucho más intimista, acústico y hasta oscuro por momentos, evidenciando la facilidad de Beck para transformarse e interpretar distintos géneros musicales con mucha calidad y facilidad, lo cual seria un sello por el resto de su carrera.
