A nest is a structure built by certain animals to hold its eggs, its offspring, or occasionally the animal itself. Although nests are most closely associated with birds, members of all classes of vertebrates and some invertebrates construct nests. They may be composed of organic material such as twigs, grass, and leaves, or may be a simple depression in the ground, or a hole in a rock, tree, or building. Human-made materials, such as string, plastic, cloth, or paper, may also be used. Nests can be found in all types of habitat.

Nest ist eine Bezeichnung für Baue, die von verschiedenen Tierarten hergestellt werden und ihnen als Schlaf-, Wohn- und Brutstätte dienen. Eierlegende Tiere suchen meist einen geschützten Platz zur Eiablage, viele Vögel bauen dazu Gelegenester, häufig wird dieses zusätzlich gestaltet, insbesondere bei anschließender Brutpflege dafür besonders ausgestattet. Artspezifisch unterschiedlich findet man unter anderem bei Vögeln und Säugetieren gepolsterte Nester, bei Fischen Pflanzen- (Stichlinge) und Schaumnester, bei Insekten zum Beispiel Bienenwaben oder bei Ameisen auch Ameisennester.

Le nid désigne généralement la structure construite par les oiseaux pour fournir un premier abri à leur progéniture. Les nids sont généralement fabriqués à partir de matériaux organiques tels que brindilles, herbes, mousses ou feuilles, parfois garnis de plumes. Certains oiseaux, comme le Faucon pèlerin, peuvent utiliser le nid abandonné d'autres espèces, d'autres comme le Coucou, pondent dans la couvée d'une autre espèce.
