nictitating membrane

The nictitating membrane (from Latin , to blink) is a transparent or translucent third eyelid present in some animals that can be drawn across the eye for protection and to moisten it while maintaining visibility. Some reptiles, birds, and sharks have full nictitating membranes; in many mammals, a small, vestigial portion of the membrane remains in the corner of the eye. Some mammals, such as camels, polar bears, seals and aardvarks, have full nictitating membranes. Often called a third eyelid or haw, it may be referred to in scientific terminology as the plica semilunaris, membrana nictitans or palpebra tertia.

Die Nickhaut (Plica semilunaris conjunctivae, Membrana nicitans) oder „drittes Augenlid“ (Palpebra tertia) ist eine zusätzliche Bindehautfalte im nasenseitigen Augenwinkel. Beim Menschen und den meisten Primaten – eine Ausnahme ist der Gewöhnliche Bärenmaki – ist sie nur rudimentär. Bei vielen anderen Wirbeltieren ist sie transparent und kann wie eine Schutzbrille vor das Auge geklappt werden.

Het knipvlies, derde ooglid of membrana nictitans komt bij vele dieren voor. Verschillende reptielsoorten, vogels (bijvoorbeeld kippen) en haaien hebben een volledig ontwikkeld knipvlies, terwijl in andere diersoorten alleen een overblijfsel zichtbaar is in de ooghoeken. Ook sommige zoogdieren zoals ijsberen en zeeleeuwen hebben een volledig ontwikkeld knipvlies vanwege hun jachtgedrag in water. Bij mensen is een restant zichtbaar als een paars klontje in de ooghoeken.

La membrane nictitante est une troisième paupière transparente ou translucide que possèdent certains animaux qui recouvre l'œil afin de le protéger et l'humidifier tout en permettant une certaine visibilité. Certains reptiles, oiseaux, amphibiens et poissons (notamment les requins) possèdent une membrane nictitante pleinement fonctionnelle alors que de nombreux mammifères ne possèdent qu'un vestige de cette membrane et des muscles associés dans le coin de l'œil (notamment chez l'homme). Certains mammifères, tels que les chiens, chats, ours polaires, phoques et oryctéropes, ont cependant une membrane nictitante complète. On la rencontre également chez les monotrèmes et les marsupiaux.

Może być nasuwana na oko, czyści i zwilża rogówkę. U większości ptaków dziennych jest przezroczysta, u sów i u pluszcza nieprzezroczysta. U hatterii może być przesuwana poziomo od wewnątrz do zewnątrz oka, podczas gdy górna i dolna powieka pozostają otwarte.
