In its most general form, a nipple is a structure from which a fluid emanates. More specifically, it is the projection on the breasts or udder of a mammal by which, in females, breast milk is delivered to a mother's young. In this sense, it is often called a teat, especially when referring to non-humans, and the medical term used to refer to it is papilla. A breast or nipple is sometimes called a "pap". The rubber mouthpiece of a baby bottle or pacifier may also be referred to as a "nipple" or a "teat". In humans, nipples of both males and females are also one of the erogenous zones. In many cultures, human female nipples are sexualized and it is considered a taboo or a public indecency to uncover them in public.

Brustwarze (auch Mamille, lat. Mamilla, d. i. Diminutiv von lateinisch mamma „weibliche Brust“; die korrekte lateinische anatomische Bezeichnung ist Papilla mammae) ist bei den Primaten die Mündung der Milchdrüsen. Die Brustwarze entspricht der Zitze aller anderen Säugetiere.

Een tepel is een centraal punt gelegen op de borst van een vrouw of man of op de uier van een vrouwelijk of mannelijk zoogdier. Uit de tepels komt tijdens het zogen de melk voor de baby of het jong. De voeding die een baby op deze manier krijgt, heet borstvoeding. De zone rond de tepel, tepelhof of areola, is bij blanke en licht gekleurde mensen donkerder van kleur dan de huid eromheen, doordat er meer pigment in de huid zit. Een tepel is over het algemeen gevoelig bij aanraking.

Le mamelon ou papille mammaire (ou téton dans le langage courant) désigne la petite partie saillante et pigmentée de la peau située sur la face antérieure du thorax, bilatérale. Il est situé chez l'homme au niveau du croisement du cinquième espace intercostal (espace entre deux côtes consécutives) avec la ligne médio-claviculaire (ligne verticale passant par le milieu de la clavicule). Il est situé chez la femme à l'extrémité antérieure du sein. Il est entouré de l'aréole. Sa fonction est essentiellement, chez la femme, l'excrétion du lait maternel au cours de l'allaitement.
