Nitrogen is a chemical element with symbol N and atomic number 7. It is the lightest pnictogen and at room temperature, it is a transparent, odorless diatomic gas. Nitrogen is a common element in the universe, estimated at about seventh in total abundance in the Milky Way and the Solar System. On Earth, the element forms about 78% of Earth's atmosphere and as such is the most abundant uncombined element. The element nitrogen was discovered as a separable component of air, by Scottish physician Daniel Rutherford, in 1772.

Stickstoff ist ein chemisches Element mit der Ordnungszahl 7 und dem Elementsymbol N. Es leitet sich von der lateinischen Bezeichnung nitrogenium ab (von altgriech. νιτρον nitron „Laugensalz“ und γενος genos „Herkunft“). Die deutsche Bezeichnung Stickstoff erinnert daran, dass molekularer Stickstoff Flammen löscht („erstickt“) oder dass in reinem Stickstoff Lebewesen ersticken. Im Periodensystem steht es in der fünften Hauptgruppe, bzw. der 15. IUPAC-Gruppe oder Stickstoffgruppe sowie der zweiten Periode.

L'azote est l'élément chimique de numéro atomique 7, de symbole N (du latin ). C'est la tête de file du groupe des pnictogènes. Dans le langage courant, l'azote désigne le corps simple N (diazote), constituant majoritaire de l'atmosphère terrestre, représentant presque les 4/5 de l'air (78,06 %, en volume).
