Nonfiction or non-fiction is content (often, in the form of a story) whose creator, in good faith, assumes responsibility for the truth or accuracy of the events, people, and/or information presented. In contrast, a story whose creator explicitly leaves open if and how the work refers to reality is usually classified as fiction. Nonfiction, which may be presented either objectively or subjectively, is traditionally one of the two main divisions of narratives (and, specifically, prose writing), the other traditional division being fiction, which contrasts with nonfiction by dealing in information, events, and characters expected to be partly or largely imaginary.

Sachbuch ist die deutschsprachige Bezeichnung für ein Buch, das ein bestimmtes Sachthema für ein Laienpublikum darstellt. Teils wird der Begriff Sachbuch synonym zum englischen „non-fiction“ verwendet und bildet dann das Gegenstück zur Belletristik im weiteren Sinne, entsprechend der „fiction“ im Englischen (von lateinisch „fictum“, erfunden).

Met non-fictie (de Engelse term non-fiction is eveneens gebruikelijk) worden informatieve teksten of beelden aangeduid, die hoofdzakelijk op de werkelijkheid betrekking hebben. Dit in tegenstelling tot fictie, dat zich afspeelt in de fantasie van de maker van de teksten of beelden. Onder "werkelijkheid" wordt in dit verband verstaan wat de maker als werkelijkheid beschouwt. Zo worden religieuze werken als de Bijbel en de Koran in het algemeen als non-fictie beschouwd, ook al zullen lezers die niet het christendom respectievelijk de islam aanhangen, een deel van de in deze boeken beschreven gebeurtenissen als verzinsels beschouwen.

nonfiction.fr est un site Web d'actualité des idées et de critiques des livres. Association loi de 1901, nonfiction est animé par un collectif de chercheurs, de journalistes, de militants politiques, syndicaux et associatifs, de chefs d'entreprises et de créateurs de sites Web. Son lancement est contemporain de ceux du site La Vie des idées, nouvelle version en ligne de la revue papier de La République des idées, et de La Revue internationale des livres et des idées, dont les styles et les orientations diffèrent, mais qui marquent ensemble un renouveau de l'intérêt pour la critique de livres (d'essais) en France.

Facklitteratur är litteratur som är inriktad på ett vetenskapligt område, och som innehåller fakta snarare än fiktion. Motsatsen är skönlitteratur.
