The Nymphalidae are the largest family of butterflies with about 6,000 species distributed throughout most of the world. These are usually medium-sized to large butterflies. Most species have a reduced pair of forelegs and many hold their colourful wings flat when resting. They are also called brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies, because they are known to stand on only four legs while the other two are curled up; in some species these forelegs have a brush-like set of hairs which gives this species its other common name. Many species are brightly coloured and include popular species such as the emperors, Monarch butterfly, admirals, tortoiseshells, and fritillaries. However, the underwings are, in contrast, often dull and in some species look remarkably like dead leaves, or are much paler, producing a cryptic effect that helps the butterflies disappear into their surroundings.

Die Edelfalter (Nymphalidae) sind eine Familie der Ordnung der Schmetterlinge (Lepidoptera). Zu dieser großen, weltweit etwa 6000 Arten umfassenden Familie gehören einige der farbenprächtigsten Falter Europas. Unter diesen Arten sind zahlreiche sehr bekannte Vertreter der Schmetterlinge wie z. B. Tagpfauenauge (Inachis io) und Kleiner Fuchs (Aglais urticae) zu finden.

De Nymphalidae zijn een familie van dagvlinders die de schoenlappers, parelmoervlinders en zandoogjes (naamgeving volgens het Nederlands soortenregister) ofwel aurelia's (naamgeving volgens de Vlinderstichting op Vlindernet) bevat. De Nederlandse naamgeving is een lappendeken van oude benamingen voor (onder)families. Tot deze familie worden afhankelijk van de gehanteerde taxonomie een verschillend aantal onderfamilies gerekend.

La famille des Nymphalidae (nymphalidés) comprend plus de 5 000 espèces de papillons dans le monde. On en compte environ 70 en Europe. Ce sont en général des papillons de taille moyenne ou grande à ailes vivement colorées. La première paire de pattes est réduite. Chez le mâle, les pattes sont pourvues de brosses formées par de longues écailles poilues alors qu'elles sont à poils courts chez la femelle. Ces papillons n'utilisent que quatre pattes pour marcher.

Rusałkowate, południcowate, południce, perłowce (Nymphalidae) − rodzina z grupy motyli dziennych (Rhopalocera). W 633 rodzajach zawiera 5 700 gatunków rozpowszechnionych na całym świecie (w Polsce 75), m.in. rusałki, przeplatki, dostojki, mieniaki. Mają zredukowaną przednią parę odnóży, zatraciły funkcje kroczne, samiec używa ich do czyszczenia czułek. Gąsienice owłosione lub kolczaste. Rodzina południc składa się z podrodzin:
