Holiday
A holiday is a day set aside by custom or by law on which normal activities, especially business or work, are suspended or reduced. Generally, holidays are intended to allow individuals to celebrate or commemorate an event or tradition of cultural or religious significance. Holidays may be designated by governments, religious institutions, or other groups or organizations. The degree to which normal activities are reduced by a holiday may depend on local laws, customs, the type of job being held or even personal choices.

Feiertag
Unter einem Feiertag (ahd. fîra aus ‚ ‚Festtag‘, ‚der religiösen Feier gewidmeter, arbeitsfreier Tag‘; dazu feiern, ursprünglich ‚die Arbeit ruhen lassen‘, ahd. fîrôn v. lat. ; vgl. Feierabend, Ferien) oder Festtag (, ‚ein der [öffentlichen] religiösen Feier gewidmeter Tag‘; vgl. Fest) wird allgemein ein arbeitsfreier Tag mit besonderer Feiertagsruhe verstanden. Alle Kulturen und Völker feiern regelmäßig bestimmte Ereignisse von gesellschaftlichem oder religiösem Rang. Diese sind oft durch die Rechtsordnungen der einzelnen Staaten besonders geschützt. Man spricht dann von gesetzlichen Feiertagen.

Feest- en gedenkdagen
Feest- en gedenkdagen zijn dagen waarin een historische gebeurtenis of historisch feit op nationale of internationale schaal algemeen of door bepaalde groepen in de maatschappij worden herdacht. Feestdagen die bij wet vastgelegd zijn en waarop werknemers doorgaans vrijaf hebben zijn wettelijke of officiële feestdagen.
