obstruent

An obstruent is a speech sound such as , , or that is formed by obstructing airflow. Obstruents contrast with sonorants, which have no such obstruction and therefore resonate. All obstruents are consonants, whereas sonorants include vowels and consonants.

Als Obstruent (auch Geräuschkonsonant, Geräuschlaut) werden Sprachlaute, genauer: eine Gruppe von Konsonanten, bezeichnet, bei denen eine Verengung oder ein Verschluss der Artikulationsorgane gebildet wird, wodurch der Phonationsstrom durch Nase oder Mund behindert oder unterbrochen und ein spezifisches Geräusch erzeugt wird. Zur Klasse der Obstruenten gehören Plosive, Affrikaten und Frikative. Obstruenten zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sie nicht sonorant sind.

Een obstruent (antoniem: sonorant) is een medeklinker waarvan de articulatie wordt gekenmerkt door een hoge graad van occlusie van het spraakkanaal, waardoor de uitstroom van lucht vermindert of zelfs helemaal wordt geblokkeerd.
