An oil is any neutral, nonpolar chemical substance that is a viscous liquid at ambient temperatures and is both hydrophobic (immiscible with water, literally "water fearing") and lipophilic (miscible with other oils, literally "fat loving"). Oils have a high carbon and hydrogen content and are usually flammable and slippery.

The langues d'oïl ( French: ), or oïl languages (also in ), are a dialect continuum that includes standard French and its closest autochthonous relatives spoken today in the northern half of France, southern Belgium, and the Channel Islands. They belong to the larger Gallo-Romance languages, which also cover most of east-central (Arpitania) and southern France (Occitania), northern Italy and eastern Spain (Catalan Countries), although some linguists place Catalan into the Ibero-Romance grouping instead.

Oil! is a novel by Upton Sinclair published in 1927 told as a third person narrative, with only the opening pages written in the second person. The book was written in the context of the Harding administration's Teapot Dome Scandal and takes place in Southern California. It is a social and political satire skewering the human foibles of all its characters.

Als Langues d’oïl (dt. Oïl-Sprachen) wird eine Gruppe romanischer Sprachen, genauer gesagt galloromanischer Sprachen bezeichnet, die auch als Dialekte angesehen werden. Der Name leitet sich von der im Mittelalter in diesen Sprachen üblichen Bezeichnung für „ja“ ab. Aus dem lateinischen hoc illud ist im Laufe der Zeit oïl entstanden, im heutigen Standardfranzösisch heißt es oui. Het Oudfrans is het Frans zoals dat in het noorden van Frankrijk gesproken werd van de 10e tot de 14e eeuw. Het heeft zich sindsdien via het Middelfrans ontwikkeld tot het moderne Frans, dat onder andere de standaardtaal voor bestuur, rechtspraak en literatuur is geworden in heel Frankrijk. Het Oudfrans is samen met enkele nauw verwante talen zoals het Waals en Picardisch rechtstreeks voortgekomen uit de Langue d'Oïl.

Historiquement la langue d'oïl, ou simplement oïl (prononciation : [ɔj(l)] ou [ɔil]), est la langue romane qui s’est développée dans la partie nord de la Gaule, puis dans la partie nord de la France, dans le sud de la Belgique (Belgique romane) et dans les îles Anglo-Normandes, et qui était parlée au Moyen Âge. Elle se confond dans un premier temps avec l’ancien français, qui englobe alors les différents dialectes d’oïl. L’unité de la langue prend fin au cours de la période du moyen français. Par la suite, les langues d'oïl constituent une branche de la famille des langues gallo-romanes formée par les langues issues des dialectes de cette dernière. Cette branche du nord a conservé un substrat celtique plus important et a subi une plus grande influence du germanique que sa cousine occitano-romane du sud, la langue d'oc.
