Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. Commonly used drying oils include linseed oil,  poppy seed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. The choice of oil imparts a range of properties to the oil paint, such as the amount of yellowing or drying time. Certain differences, depending on the oil, are also visible in the sheen of the paints. An artist might use several different oils in the same painting depending on specific pigments and effects desired. The paints themselves also develop a particular consistency depending on the medium. The oil may be boiled with a resin, such as pine resin or frankincense, to create a varnish prized for its body and gloss.

Die Ölmalerei ist die künstlerische Malerei mit Ölfarben und gilt als „klassische Königsdisziplin“ der Kunst, die insbesondere bei Porträt-, Landschafts-, Stillleben- und Genremalerei zur Anwendung kommt. Die Haltbarkeit und Farbbrillanz der Ölmalerei ist unübertroffen. Öl ist als Bindemittel ein Hauptbestandteil der Ölfarbe, woraus sich die Bezeichnung für die Ölmalerei ableitet.

Olieverf is een verfsoort, een mengsel van pigment in de vorm van een zeer fijn gekleurd poeder met, als bindmiddel, een plantaardige drogende olie, meestal lijnolie. Olieverf is vanaf de 15e eeuw een belangrijk medium in de schilderkunst. Ze werd voor het eerst gebruikt door de Vlaamse Primitieven.

La peinture à l'huile est une des techniques picturales, dans laquelle on utilise un mélange de pigments et d'huile siccative (le liant ou véhicule), permettant d'obtenir une pâte plus ou moins épaisse et grasse. Cette pâte s'applique à l'aide de brosses sur un support en toile apprêtée montée sur un châssis, ou marouflée sur un panneau rigide. D'autres supports sont aussi utilisés comme le carton ou le bois. Plusieurs types de diluants et de médiums à peindre sont employés pour en faciliter l'application, ou modifier sa texture.
