Embezzlement is an act of dishonestly withholding assets for the purpose of conversion (theft) of such assets, by one or more persons to whom the assets were entrusted, either to be held or to be used for specific purposes. Embezzlement is a type of financial fraud, e.g. a lawyer might embezzle funds from the trust accounts of his or her clients; a financial advisor might embezzle the funds of investors; and a husband or a wife might embezzle funds from a bank account jointly held with the spouse.

Verduistering is het zich opzettelijk wederrechtelijk toeëigenen van een goed dat aan een ander toebehoort welk goed men anders dan als gevolg van een misdrijf onder zich heeft. Het is in Nederland strafbaar gesteld in het Wetboek van Strafrecht, art. 321-325 en het Wetboek van Strafrecht BES, art. 334-338 en er staat een maximumstraf op van drie jaar of een geldboete van de vijfde categorie.

Przywłaszczenie – występek polegający na włączeniu cudzej rzeczy ruchomej lub cudzego prawa majątkowego do swojego majątku. Przywłaszczona rzecz musi wcześniej znajdować się w legalnym posiadaniu sprawcy chociażby wskutek jej znalezienia. Sprawca, który przywłaszcza sobie rzecz postępuje z nią tak, jakby był jej właścicielem. Przywłaszczyć można również prawo majątkowe, ale tylko takie, które sprawca mógł uprzednio legalnie wykonywać lub z niego korzystać np. na podstawie zezwolenia udzielonego mu przez osobę uprawnioną. Przywłaszczenie prawa sprowadza się do tego, że sprawca zaczyna wykonywać prawo tak, jakby sam był osobą uprawnioną czyniąc to dla siebie z pominięciem osób, którym to prawo przynależy.
