An intimate relationship is an interpersonal relationship that involves physical or emotional intimacy. Physical intimacy is characterized by romantic or passionate attachment or sexual activity. While the term intimate relationship commonly implies the inclusion of a sexual relationship, the term is also used as a euphemism for a relationship that is strictly sexual.

Als Soziale Beziehung (auch Zwischenmenschliche Beziehung) bezeichnet man in der Soziologie eine Beziehung von zwei Personen oder Gruppen, bei denen ihr Denken, Handeln oder Fühlen gegenseitig aufeinander bezogen ist. Soziale Beziehungen sind eine elementare Voraussetzung des Menschen, um gesellschaftlich erfolgreich zu leben. Erlernt er in seinen allerersten Jahren nicht, sie einzugehen (siehe Urvertrauen), so ist er zeitlebens geschädigt.

Une relation humaine implique au moins deux êtres humains et est souvent décrite via des typologies différentes, selon la personne s'intéressant à la nature de la relation ou plutôt aux personnes en relation. Ces relations peuvent se fonder sur l'amour, la fraternité, la solidarité, la compagnie, des interactions professionnelles ou d'autres types d'activités sociales. Les relations interpersonnelles (amoureuses ou familiales) appartiennent au contexte de la relation humaine et culturelle.

Con il termine coppia si vuole descrivere la relazione interpersonale che intercorre tra due persone. Il termine generalmente si riferisce a rapporti in cui ci sia confidenza, coinvolgimento e intimità emotiva, sentimentale e/o erotico-sessuale, ma in senso lato, può anche indicare un rapporto di tipo professionale o socialmente noto. Le relazioni di coppia svolgono un ruolo centrale nell'esperienza umana. Esse rispondono ad un bisogno di "attaccamento", di vicinanza e intimità e possono fornire sostegno reciproco.
