Phenol, also known as carbolic acid, is an aromatic organic compound with the molecular formula C₆H₅OH. It is a white crystalline solid that is volatile. The molecule consists of a phenyl group (-C₆H₅) bonded to a hydroxyl group (-OH). It is mildly acidic and requires careful handling due to its propensity to cause chemical burns.

Phenol (nach IUPAC: Benzenol, veraltet: Karbolsäure oder kurz Karbol) ist eine aromatische, organische Verbindung und besteht aus einer Phenylgruppe (–C₆H₅), an die eine Hydroxygruppe (–OH) gebunden ist. Der farblose, kristalline Feststoff ist eine wichtige Industriechemikalie und dient als Zwischenprodukt besonders zur Herstellung diverser Kunststoffe. Phenol ist der einfachste Vertreter der Phenole. Mit Basen bildet Phenol Salze, die Phenolate.

Fenol of hydroxybenzeen, vroeger ook wel carbolzuur of carbol genoemd, is een organische verbinding bestaande uit een benzeenring waarvan één waterstofatoom is gesubstitueerd door een hydroxylgroep (OH). Fenol is daarom een aromatische alcohol. In oudere teksten wordt fenol soms benzol genoemd, al is dit een germanisme: in het Duits wordt met benzol de stof benzeen aangeduid.

Le phénol, appelé aussi hydroxybenzène, acide phénique, ou encore acide carbolique, est composé d'un noyau phénylène et d'une fonction hydroxyle. C'est la plus simple molécule de la famille des phénols.
