Body piercing, a form of body modification, is the practice of puncturing or cutting a part of the human body, creating an opening in which jewellery may be worn. The word piercing can refer to the act or practice of body piercing, or to an opening in the body created by this act or practice. Although the history of body piercing is obscured by popular misinformation and by a lack of scholarly reference, ample evidence exists to document that it has been practiced in various forms by both sexes since ancient times throughout the world.

Piercing (von englisch to pierce [] „durchbohren, durchstechen“, über altfranzösisch percier und vulgärlateinisch *pertusiare aus  lateinisch pertundere, pertusus „durchstoßen, durchbrechen“) ist eine Form der Körpermodifikation, bei der Schmuck in Form von Ringen oder Stäben an verschiedenen Stellen des menschlichen Körpers durch die Haut und darunter liegendes Fett- oder Knorpelgewebe hindurch angebracht wird. Obwohl das Phänomen an sich schon alt ist, etablierte sich der Begriff Piercing erst Mitte der 1990er Jahre.

Een piercing is een uit het Engels afkomstige term voor het maken van een gaatje in de huid (of een ander oppervlakkig lichaamsdeel) om daardoor een (meestal metalen) voorwerp te steken. Ook dit voorwerp zelf (het sieraad dus) wordt soms piercing genoemd, maar dat is in wezen incorrect.

Le piercing ou perçage est une pratique consistant à percer une partie du corps pour y mettre un bijou. C'est un type de modification corporelle. Le mot est issu de l'anglais to pierce, qui signifie « percer ». L'équivalent exact en anglais est body piercing (perçage du corps).
