Plant pathology
Plant pathology (also phytopathology) is the scientific study of diseases in plants caused by pathogens (infectious organisms) and environmental conditions (physiological factors). Organisms that cause infectious disease include fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, viruses, viroids, virus-like organisms, phytoplasmas, protozoa, nematodes and parasitic plants. Not included are ectoparasites like insects, mites, vertebrate, or other pests that affect plant health by consumption of plant tissues. Plant pathology also involves the study of pathogen identification, disease etiology, disease cycles, economic impact, plant disease epidemiology, plant disease resistance, how plant diseases affect humans and animals, pathosystem genetics, and management of plant diseases.

Fytopathologie
Fytopathologie of plantenziektekunde is de studie van de interactie tussen planten en plantpathogenen met als doel het ontwikkelen van strategieën voor de preventie en bestrijding van plantpathogenen.
Ook het gevolg van de werking van abiotische factoren, zoals luchtverontreiniging, wind en koude, op de plant evenals de invloed van vruchtwisseling worden bestudeerd.

گياه‌پزشکي
آسیب‌شناسی گیاهی بیماری‌شناسی گیاهی یا گیاه‌پزشکی شاخه‌ای از علوم مرتبط با کشاورزی است که به دنبال جمع آوری دانش و اطلاعات مربوط به عوامل بیماری زا گیاهی و بیماری های گیاهی و مدیریت یا کنترل بیماری های گیاهی . معادل انگلیسی گیاه‌پزشکی Plant protection بوده در برخی منابع Plant medicine نیز بکار می رود. در ایران سابقا تحت عنوان حفظ نباتات نیز شناخته می شد و سازمانی نیز تحت همین عنوان وجود داشت. در سال ۱۳۰۰ برای اولین بار در مدرسه فلاحت مظفری (دانشکده کشاورزی کرج) این رشته توسط دکتر فرشید ارائه گردید این شاخه از کشاورزی خود شامل سه بخش حشره‌شناسی کشاورزی، بیماری‌شناسی گیاهی و علوم علفهای هرز می‌باشد که به ترتیب بطور تخصصی مسایل مربوط به آفات، بیماریها و علفهای هرز را مطالعه می نمایند.
