In phonetics, a stop, also known as a plosive, is an oral occlusive, a consonant in which the vocal tract is blocked so that all airflow ceases. The occlusion may be made with the tongue blade (, ) or body (, ), lips (, ), or glottis . Stops contrast with nasals, where the vocal tract is blocked but airflow continues through the nose, as in and , and with fricatives, where partial occlusion impedes but does not block airflow in the vocal tract.

Plosiv[laut]e (auch Explosiv[laut]e, Okklusiv[laut]e, Klusile, Mutä oder Verschlusslaute) werden die Konsonanten genannt, bei deren Artikulation der Atemluftstrom blockiert wird. Durch die sofort darauf folgende Wiederfreisetzung des gestauten Luftstromes entsteht eine kleine „Explosion“, die den Klang erzeugt. Die Benennung erfolgt also nach der Artikulationsart. Der Verschluss erfolgt zum Beispiel durch einen Kontakt der Lippen (Beispiel: , ) oder der Zunge mit dem Artikulationsort im Vokaltrakt oder Ansatzrohr (Beispiele: , , , ).

Een plosief of occlusief, ook wel plofklank genoemd, is een medeklinker die gekenmerkt wordt door een belangrijke graad van obstructie. De plosieven behoren tot de ruimere klankencategorie van de obstruenten en stopklanken.

En phonétique articulatoire, une consonne occlusive (ou brièvement une occlusive) désigne une consonne dont le mode d'articulation fait intervenir un blocage complet de l'écoulement de l'air au niveau de la bouche, du pharynx ou de la glotte, et le relâchement soudain de ce blocage.

Spółgłoski zwarte powstają, gdy w czasie artykulacji dochodzi do blokady przepływu powietrza przez jamę ustną i nosową (zwarcia, implozji), po czym następuje gwałtowne jej przerwanie (rozwarcie, wybuch, eksplozja, plozja). Spółgłoski zwarte z plozją nazywa się spółgłoskami zwarto-wybuchowymi.
