plural

The plural, in many languages, is one of the values of the grammatical category of number. Plural of nouns typically denote a quantity other than the default quantity represented by a noun, which is generally one (the form that represents this default quantity is said to be of singular number). Most commonly, therefore, plurals are used to denote two or more of something, although they may also denote more than fractional, zero or negative amounts. An example of a plural is the English word cats, which corresponds to the singular cat.

Der Plural ( ‚Mehrzahl‘, abgeleitet von ‚mehrere‘; Abkürzung: Plur., Pl.) ist der grammatische Fachausdruck für Mehrzahl. Dem Plural gegenübergestellt ist der Singular, die Einzahl. In manchen Sprachen gibt es weitere Zählformen, siehe Numerus.

En lingüística, el plural es una de las posibles realizaciones del número gramatical que se contrapone al singular y a otros «números gramaticales» (cuando existen más de uno o dos). En muchas lenguas el plural se usa cuando se habla de dos o más entidades del mismo tipo (singular vs. plural), en otras lenguas el plural se restringe a cuando existen más de cuatro o cinco entidades del mismo tipo, siendo los casos con menos entidades cubiertos por los números dual, trial, paucal, etc. Todas las lenguas distinguen el plural en los pronombres, aunque en algunas lenguas el plural no es obligatorio en los nombres. Igualmente en muchas lenguas flexivas del mundo el plural también tiene marcas específicas en las formas verbales conjugadas.

In de taalkunde wordt met meervoud het verschijnsel bedoeld dat aan de vorm van een woord te zien valt dat het om meer dan één exemplaar van een aangeduid begrip gaat. Het meervoud is daarmee een van de aspecten van het begrip getal, dat in verschillende talen voorts verschillend kan worden gerealiseerd.
