Polarization or polarisation can refer to:

• Polarization (waves) or State of Polarization (SOP), the direction(s) of the oscillating quantity involved in wave motion.
  • Polarization (antenna), the state of polarization (in the above sense) of electromagnetic waves transmitted by or received by a radio antenna
• Dielectric polarization, charge separation in insulating materials:
  • Polarization density, volume dielectric polarization
  • Dipolar polarization, orientation of permanent dipoles
  • Ionic polarization, displacement of ions in a crystal
  • Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars polarization, slow long-distance charge separation in dielectric spectroscopy on inhomogeneous soft matter
• Polarization (electrochemistry), a change in the equilibrium potential of an electrochemical reaction

Die Polarisation einer Transversalwelle beschreibt die Richtung ihrer Schwingung. Ändert sich diese Richtung schnell und ungeordnet, spricht man von einer unpolarisierten Welle. Der Polarisationsgrad gibt den geordneten Anteil an. Bei in Ausbreitungsrichtung schwingenden Wellen, den Longitudinalwellen, gibt es keine Polarisation.

Polarisatie is een begrip dat in de natuurkunde in een aantal verbanden gebruikt wordt. In het algemeen betekent het opheffen van een ongerichte, willekeurige staat door het aanbrengen van een uitwendig -bijvoorbeeld elektrisch of magnetisch- veld.

La polarisation est une propriété des ondes vectorielles, c'est-à-dire pouvant osciller selon plus d'une orientation, de présenter une répartition privilégiée de l'orientation des vibrations qui les composent. Les ondes électromagnétiques, telles que la lumière, ou les ondes gravitationnelles ont ainsi des propriétés de polarisation tandis que les ondes mécaniques (telles que les ondes sonores) ne sont pas concernées.
