A pollutant is a substance or energy introduced into the environment that has undesired effects, or adversely affects the usefulness of a resource. A pollutant may cause long- or short-term damage by changing the growth rate of plant or animal species, or by interfering with human amenities, comfort, health, or property values. Some pollutants are biodegradable and therefore will not persist in the environment in the long term. However the degradation products of some pollutants are themselves polluting such as the products DDE and DDD produced from degradation of DDT.

Unter Umweltverschmutzung wird allgemein die Verschmutzung der Umwelt, das heißt des natürlichen Lebensumfelds des Menschen verstanden. Im Vordergrund steht dabei die Umweltbelastung mit Abfällen bzw. Emissionen stofflicher und nicht stofflicher Art.

Milieuverontreiniging of -vervuiling is aantasting van het milieu door menselijke activiteiten. Het gaat hierbij niet alleen om chemische verbindingen, maar ook om geluid, licht, straling en dergelijke. Deze zaken kunnen zowel natuurlijk zijn, zoals koolstofdioxide en fosfaat, als onnatuurlijk, zoals plastics en door de mens gemaakte isotopen.

La pollution est la dégradation d'un écosystème par l'introduction, généralement humaine, de substances ou de radiations altérant de manière plus ou moins importante le fonctionnement de cet écosystème. Par extension, le mot désigne aussi parfois les conséquences de phénomènes géologiques comme une éruption volcanique.

Zanieczyszczenie środowiska — stan środowiska wynikający z wprowadzania do powietrza, wody lub gruntu, substancji stałych, ciekłych lub gazowych lub energii w takich ilościach i takim składzie, że może to ujemnie wpływać na zdrowie człowieka, przyrodę ożywioną, klimat, glebę, wodę lub powodować inne niekorzystne zmiany, np. korozję metali.
