A polymer (; Greek , "many" + , "parts") is a large molecule, or macromolecule, composed of many repeated subunits. Because of their broad range of properties, both synthetic and natural polymers play an essential and ubiquitous role in everyday life. Polymers range from familiar synthetic plastics such as polystyrene to natural biopolymers such as DNA and proteins that are fundamental to biological structure and function. Polymers, both natural and synthetic, are created via polymerization of many small molecules, known as monomers. Their consequently large molecular mass relative to small molecule compounds produces unique physical properties, including toughness, viscoelasticity, and a tendency to form glasses and semicrystalline structures rather than crystals.

Ein Polymer [] (von poly ‚viel‘ und méros ‚Teil‘) ist ein chemischer Stoff, der aus Makromolekülen besteht. Die Makromoleküle eines Stoffes sind aus einer oder mehreren Struktureinheiten, den sogenannten konstitutionellen Repetiereinheiten oder Wiederholeinheiten, aufgebaut. Das Adjektiv polymer bedeutet entsprechend „aus vielen (gleichen) Teilen aufgebaut“. In vielen Fällen besteht ein Polymer aus nicht identischen Makromolekülen, da die Anzahl der Wiederholeinheiten und damit die Molekülmasse der Moleküle variiert. Synthetische oder halbsynthetische Polymere sind die Hauptkomponente für die Herstellung von Kunststoffen. Von Lebewesen erzeugte Polymere werden Biopolymere genannt und haben essentielle Bedeutung für das Leben.
