In polymer chemistry, polymerization is a process of reacting monomer molecules together in a chemical reaction to form  polymer chains or three-dimensional networks. There are many forms of polymerization and different systems exist to categorize them.

Polymerisation ist eine doppeldeutige Bezeichnung aus der Polymerchemie. Sie ist eine Reaktion, bei der makromolekulare Stoffe (umgangssprachlich Kunststoffe oder Plastik) erzeugt werden, also Stoffe mit einer hohen Molmasse.

Polymerisatie is het samenvoegen van kleine koolwaterstoffen tot een lange keten. Polymerisatie kan met twee verschillende reactiemechanismen worden uitgevoerd:

• Additiepolymerisatie (kettingpolymerisatie)
• Condensatiepolymerisatie

La polymérisation désigne la réaction chimique ou le procédé par lesquels des petites molécules (par exemple des hydrocarbures de deux à dix atomes de carbone) réagissent entre elles pour former des molécules de masses molaires plus élevées. Les molécules initiales peuvent être des monomères ou des pré-polymères ; la synthèse conduit à des polymères.

Polimeryzacja to reakcja, w wyniku której związki chemiczne o małej masie cząsteczkowej zwane monomerami lub mieszanina kilku takich związków reagują same ze sobą, aż do wyczerpania wolnych grup funkcyjnych, w wyniku czego powstają cząsteczki o wielokrotnie większej masie cząsteczkowej od substratów, tworząc polimer.
