The term popular music belongs to a number of musical genres "having wide appeal" and typically distributed to large audiences through the music industry. These forms and styles can be enjoyed and performed by people with little or no musical training. It stands in contrast to both art music and traditional music. Art music was historically disseminated through the performances of written music, although since the beginning of the recording industry, it is also disseminated through recordings. Traditional music forms such as early blues songs or hymns were passed orally, or to smaller, local audiences. The original application of the term is to music of the 1880s Tin Pan Alley period in the United States. Although popular music sometimes is known as "pop music", the two terms are not interchangeable. Popular music is a generic term for music of all ages that appeals to popular tastes, whereas pop music usually refers to a specific musical genre within popular music. The song structure of popular music commonly involves the verse, chorus or refrain, and bridge as the different sections within a piece. With digital access to music, some popular music forms have become global, while others are have wide appeal within the culture of origin. Through hybridity, or mixture across musical genres, new popular music forms are able to be manufactured to reflect the ideals of a global culture. The examples of the African continent, Indonesia, and the Middle East explain how hybridity can develop into new forms of popular music.

Popmuziek is een afkorting van 'populaire muziek'. Het is evenals eigentijdse muziek een verzamelnaam voor tal van stijlen in de muziek, maar meer gericht op de populariteit dan naar de diversiteit van de muziek. De gemeenschappelijke noemer van popmuziek is dat een breed publiek toegang heeft tot de muziek. In wezen is dat tegenwoordig altijd het geval, maar in de tijd dat de term ontstond, grofweg ongeveer na 1945, was het voor het eerst dat muziek bereikbaar werd voor iedereen. Het kopen van of luisteren naar muziek was voordien vaak voorbehouden aan mensen die dat konden betalen. De term 'popmuziek' is nauw verbonden met termen als jeugdcultuur, massacultuur en commercie. Popmuziek is te zien als een van de verworvenheden van de nieuwe cultuurbeleving na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, waarin cultuur gemeengoed werd voor iedereen, veroorzaakt door verbetering en beschikbaarheid van de technologie. Daarnaast gaf de economische impuls die in de jaren vijftig ontstond jongeren de gelegenheid consument te worden. In de eerste jaren van de popmuziek wordt zij dan ook steeds meer de uitingsvorm voor jongeren. Muziekinstrumenten die in de popmuziek worden gebruikt zijn hoofdzakelijk de elektrische gitaar, de basgitaar, drums en de synthesizer.

Muzyka rozrywkowa – pojęcie określające wszystkie gatunki muzyczne, które posiadają szeroki odbiór publiczny i są zazwyczaj dystrybuowane oraz promowane w obrębie przemysłu muzycznego. Muzyka rozrywkowa pod względem dostępności i rozpowszechniania stoi w opozycji wobec muzyki poważnej czy ludowej, które z natury rzeczy kierowane są do relatywnie nielicznych społeczności (np. kręgi akademickie, ludność lokalna). Muzyka rozrywkowa często bywa niepoprawnie utożsamiana z muzyką pop; należy zauważyć, że muzyka rozrywkowa to szerokie pojęcie, obejmujące wszelkie gatunki muzyki trafiające w gusta różnorodnej publiczności, zaś określenie "muzyka pop" odnosi się do konkretnego gatunku muzycznego.
