pozzolan

A pozzolan is a  siliceous or siliceous and  aluminous material which, in itself, possesses little or no cementitious value but which will, in finely divided form and in the presence of water, react chemically with calcium hydroxide at ordinary temperature to form compounds possessing cementitious properties. The broad definition of a pozzolan imparts no bearing on the origin of the material, only on its capability of reacting with calcium hydroxide and water. A quantification of this capability is comprised in the term pozzolanic activity. Pozzolana are naturally-occurring pozzolans of volcanic origin.

Puzzolane sind künstliche oder natürliche Gesteine aus Siliciumdioxid,  Tonerde, Kalkstein, Eisenoxid und alkalischen Stoffen, die zumeist unter Hitzeeinwirkung entstanden sind. In Verbindung mit Calciumhydroxid und Wasser sind sie bindefähig.

Puzolan là một loại vật liệu dùng trong ngành xây dựng. Loại vật liệu này đã được người Ý sử dụng trong ngành xây dựng trong thời kỳ La Mã cổ đại tại vùng Puzuoli ở Italia, và tên vật liệu này được đặt theo tên địa danh này. Pozzolan là một vật liệu mà khi kết hợp với canxi hiđroxit thì tạo thành hợp chất có tính chất xi măng. Pozzolan thường được sử dụng như là một vật liệu bổ sung (thuật ngữ kỹ thuật trong tiếng Anh là "concrete extender") cho xi măng Portland để tăng độ vền lâu dài và tăng cường các đặc tính vật liệu khác của bê tông xi măng Portland, và trong một số trường hợp, giảm giá thành bê tông.
