prefix

A prefix is an affix which is placed before the stem of a word. Adding it to the beginning of one word changes it into another word. For example, when the prefix un- is added to the word happy, it creates the word unhappy. Particularly in the study of languages, a prefix is also called a preformative, because it alters the form of the words to which it is affixed. Prefixes, like other affixes, can be either inflectional, changing the syntactic category, or derivational, changing either the lexical category or the semantic meaning. In English, there are no inflectional prefixes; English uses suffixes instead for that purpose. Prefixes, like all other affixes, are usually bound morphemes. The word prefix is itself made up of the stem fix (meaning "attach", in this case), and the prefix pre- (meaning "before"), both of which are derived from Latin roots.

Het woord prefix betekent letterlijk iets als voorvoegsel, en wordt in zeer veel contexten gebruikt, waaronder de taalkunde, telefonie en routering over het internet.

Le mot préfixe est employé dans plusieurs domaines :

• en linguistique, un préfixe est un type d'affixe qui est placé au début d'une racine pour former un nouveau mot.

Exemple : le mot préhistoire est formé de la racine histoire et du préfixe « pré- » qui signifie avant ou antérieur.

• dans plusieurs domaines scientifiques, un préfixe d'unité est un nom associé à un multiple. (ex : nano = 10^-9)

• En mathématiques, une notation préfixée est une notation pour laquelle l'opérateur est placé avant le (ou les) opérandes. L'exemple le plus courant en est la notation polonaise.

  • Dans les réseaux, un préfixe désigne une route.

Prefix är en förstavelse som sätts i början av ett ord för att ändra ordets betydelse, till exempel o-laglig, im-populär, pro-gressiv. Prefix kallas även prepositioner eller artiklar som hör till ett släktnamn (av typen von, af eller De La). Det kan även beteckna räkneord som ton, kilo och giga.

Els prefixos són afixos que es col·loquen davant de la paraula, és a dir, partícules que s'afegeixen a un lexema per formar derivats. La derivació és un fenomen molt ric per crear paraules noves i està present en tots els estadis evolutius de l'idioma. Són menys freqüents que els sufixos, tant al català com entre les diverses llengües.
