Probability is the measure of the likelihood that an event will occur. Probability is quantified as a number between 0 and 1 (where 0 indicates impossibility and 1 indicates certainty). The higher the probability of an event, the more certain we are that the event will occur. A simple example is the tossing of a fair (unbiased) coin. Since the coin is unbiased, the two outcomes ("head" and "tail") are equally probable; the probability of "head" equals the probability of "tail". Since no other outcome is possible, the probability is 1/2 (or 50%) of either "head" or "tail". In other words, the probability of "head" is 1 out of 2 outcomes and the probability of "tail" is also, 1 out of 2 outcomes.

Die Wahrscheinlichkeit (Probabilität) ist eine Einstufung von Aussagen und Urteilen nach dem Grad der Gewissheit (Sicherheit). Besondere Bedeutung hat dabei die Gewissheit von Vorhersagen. In der Mathematik hat sich mit der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie ein eigenes Fachgebiet entwickelt, das Wahrscheinlichkeiten als mathematische Objekte beschreibt, deren formale Eigenschaften im Alltag und der Philosophie auch auf Aussagen und Urteile übertragen werden.

Kans of waarschijnlijkheid is een basisbegrip uit de kansrekening en statistiek dat in de theorie axiomatisch is gedefinieerd en op verschillende wijze geïnterpreteerd kan worden. De belangrijkste interpretaties zijn:

• Klassiek: als uitdrukking voor het optreden van gelijk mogelijke uitkomsten.
• Frequentistisch: als relatieve frequentie of frequentiequotiënt.
• Bayesiaans: als subjectieve mate van persoonlijke overtuiging

Le terme probabilité possède plusieurs sens : venu historiquement du latin probabilitas, il désigne l'opposé du concept de certitude ; il est également une évaluation du caractère probable d'un événement, c'est-à-dire qu'une valeur permet de représenter son degré de certitude ; récemment, la probabilité est devenue une science mathématique et est appelée théorie des probabilités ou plus simplement probabilités; enfin une doctrine porte également le nom de probabilisme.
