Prose is a form of language that exhibits a grammatical structure and a natural flow of speech rather than a rhythmic structure (as in traditional poetry). While there are critical debates on the construction of prose, its simplicity and loosely defined structure have led to its adoption for use in the majority of spoken dialogue, factual discourse and both topical and fictional writing. It is commonly used, for example, in literature, newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, broadcasting, film, history, philosophy, law and other forms of communication.

Prosa (lat.  „gerade heraus“, „schlichte Rede“) bezeichnet die ungebundene Sprache im Gegensatz zur Formulierung in Versen, Reimen oder in bewusst rhythmischer Sprache. Als prosaisch bezeichnet man davon abgeleitet eine vergleichsweise trockene, nüchterne Darstellung.

Proza is iedere tekst die is geschreven of gesproken in de vorm van gewone taal. Proza kan kunstig in elkaar gezet zijn, zelfs rijm en een metrum (maatsoort) bevatten, maar zodra de vorm van de tekst (met name de vorm van de regels) tot doel wordt en de bladspiegel geen enkele rol meer speelt, is er sprake van poëzie. Een mengvorm tussen proza en poëzie noemt men poëtisch proza, of prozagedicht.

La prose est la forme ordinaire du discours oral ou écrit, non astreinte aux règles de la versification, de la musicalité et du rythme qui sont propres à la poésie. Elle doit néanmoins respecter les règles de la grammaire et peut présenter une grande gamme de qualité stylistique et de nuances prosodiques, selon les efforts ou la culture de l'auteur ou du locuteur.
