PuTTY () is a free and open-source terminal emulator, serial console and network file transfer application. It supports several network protocols, including SCP, SSH, Telnet, rlogin, and raw socket connection. It can also connect to a serial port (since version 0.59). The name "PuTTY" has no definitive meaning.

Putty is a generic term for a material with high plasticity, similar in texture to clay or dough, typically used in domestic construction and repair as a sealant or filler. Painter's Putty is typically a linseed oil-based product used for filling holes, minor cracks and defacements in wood only. Putties can also be made intumescent, in which case they are used for firestopping as well as for padding of electrical outlet boxes in fire-resistance rated drywall assemblies. In the latter case, hydrates in the putty produce an endothermic reaction to mitigate heat transfer to the unexposed side.

PuTTY ist eine freie Software zum Herstellen von Verbindungen über Secure Shell, Telnet, Remote login oder serielle Schnittstellen. Dabei dient PuTTY als Client und stellt die Verbindung zu einem Server her. Beim Verbindungsaufbau wird die Identität des Benutzers mittels einer der bereitgestellten Methoden zur Authentifizierung überprüft. PuTTY ist für Windows und Linux verfügbar, inoffiziell auch für Windows Mobile und  Symbian OS. PuTTY wird hauptsächlich von Windows-Usern benutzt, da Windows im Gegensatz zu den meisten Linux Distributionen und Mac OS X keinen SSH-Client vorinstalliert hat, Microsoft plant allerdings eine SSH-Unterstützung für die PowerShell. Auch einige Android-Apps bauen auf der Software auf.

PuTTY is een vrije telnet- en SSH-client. Het is software waarmee iemand een verbinding kan maken met een andere computer, meestal zijn dit servers met een op UNIX gebaseerd besturingssysteem. PuTTY is een vervanging voor een terminal (ook wel Teletype, TTY genoemd), een machine die voor de introductie van de personal computer gebruikt werd om te verbinden met een server. De verbinding tussen de terminalsoftware en de server verloopt tegenwoordig via het SSH-protocol, dat als veiligere opvolger wordt gezien voor het verouderde telnetprotocol.

À l'origine disponible uniquement pour Windows, il est à présent porté sur diverses plates-formes Unix (et non-officiellement sur d'autres plates-formes). PuTTY est écrit et maintenu principalement par Simon Tatham.
