A quarry is a place from which dimension stone, rock, construction aggregate, riprap, sand, gravel, or slate has been excavated from the ground. A quarry is the same thing as an open-pit mine from which minerals are extracted. The only trivial difference between the two is that open-pit mines that produce building materials and dimension stone are commonly referred to as quarries.

Ein Steinbruch dient der Gewinnung von Festgesteinen aus einer Gesteins-Lagerstätte. Bei Lockergestein spricht man hingegen von Sand- oder Schottergrube.

Een groeve is een vorm van dagbouw in open luchtwaarin zand, (natuur)steen, koolwaterstoffen of mineralen wordt gedolven. Een bepaalde vorm van een groeve is de steengroeve. Steengroeven worden meestal gebruikt voor het verkrijgen van bouwmaterialen, zoals natuursteen en kunnen zowel horizontaal als verticaal worden gegraven.

Une carrière est le lieu d'où sont extraits des matériaux de construction tel que la pierre, le sable ou différents minéraux non métalliques ou carbonifères. Le chantier se fait à ciel ouvert, soit « à flanc de coteau », soit « en fosse » (jusqu'à une centaine de mètres de profondeur parfois). Les carrières peuvent être souterraines ou sous-marines. Elles exploitent des roches meubles (éboulis, alluvionnaires) ou massives (roches consolidées sédimentaire (calcaires et grès), éruptive ou métamorphique (ardoises, granites, porphyres, gneiss, amphibolites, quartzites, schistes, basaltes, etc.).

Kamieniołom – kopalnia odkrywkowa kamienia użytkowego (skały zwięzłej o dużej twardości). Kamieniołomów nie należy mylić z kopalniami odkrywkowymi wydobywającymi skały sypkie (piaskownie, żwirownie). Nie są nimi także odkrywkowe zakłady górnicze eksploatujące skały zwięzłe o stosunkowo małej twardości (węgiel brunatny, glinka ogniotrwała), czyli takie, które można urabiać za pomocą koparek. W Polsce w kamieniołomach wydobywa się głównie: granit, bazalt, wapień, piaskowiec, marmur, melafir, sjenit.
