Rapping (or emceeing, MCing, spitting bars,or rhyming) is "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics". The components of rapping include "content", "flow" (rhythm and rhyme), and "delivery". Rapping is distinct from spoken-word poetry in that it is performed in time to a beat. Rapping is often associated with and a primary ingredient of hip-hop music, but the origins of the phenomenon can be said to predate hip-hop culture by centuries. It can also be found in alternative rock such as that of Cake, gorrilaz  and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rapping is also used in Kwaito music, a genre that originated in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is composed of hip-hop elements.

Rap [] ( „Plauderei, Unterhaltung“; „plaudern, schwatzen“) ist ein schneller, rhythmischer und markanter Sprechgesang in der populären Musik und Teil der Kultur des Hip-Hop. (deutsch: ‚klopfen‘ bzw. ‚pochen‘) deutet die Art der Musik und des Sprechgesangs an. Heute hat sich der Rap teilweise von seinen Wurzeln gelöst und wird auch in anderen Musikstilen eingesetzt, zum Beispiel in Pop, Eurodance, Crossover, Digital Hardcore und Nu Metal. Besonders im Bereich unkommerzieller Rap-Musik, wie dem sogenannten Untergrund-Rap, ist eine deutliche Abgrenzung zur ursprünglichen Hip-Hop-Musik erkennbar.

Een rapper is iemand die de tekst uit rapmuziek voordraagt. Een rapper wordt ook wel een MC genoemd, wat Master of Ceremonies betekent. Rap houdt het midden tussen gesproken woord en zang. Vaak wordt beweerd dat rap een afkorting is van Rhythm And Poetry (Ritme en Poëzie). Deze muziekstijl wordt overal ter wereld uitgevoerd.
