In mathematics, a ratio is a relationship between two numbers indicating how many times the first number contains the second. For example, if a bowl of fruit contains eight oranges and six lemons, then the ratio of oranges to lemons is eight to six (that is, 8:6, which is equivalent to the ratio 4:3). Thus, a ratio can be a fraction as opposed to a whole number. Also, in this example the ratio of lemons to oranges is 6:8 (or 3:4), and the ratio of oranges to the total amount of fruit is 8:14 (or 4:7).

En matemáticas la razón es una relación binaria entre magnitudes (es decir, objetos, personas, estudiantes, cucharadas,  unidades del SI, etc.), generalmente se expresa como "a es a b" o a:b. En el caso de números toda razón se puede expresar como una fracción y eventualmente como un decimal 

In de wiskunde is de verhouding (ratio) tussen twee grootheden het quotiënt ervan. Soms wordt een speciale schrijfwijze gebruikt met behulp van een dubbele punt. Als het quotiënt bijvoorbeeld 3 is wordt dit genoteerd als 3 : 1 en uitgesproken als 3 staat tot 1 of 3 op 1. Soms wordt een schuine streep gebruikt, dan kan de schrijfwijze overeenkomen met deze van een quotiënt. Zo kan 2 / 3 , als getal, uitgesproken worden als twee derde, en als verhouding als 2 staat tot 3 of 2 op 3.
