reduplicate

Reduplication in linguistics is a morphological process in which the root or stem of a word (or part of it) or even the whole word is repeated exactly or with a slight change.

Die Reduplikation ist ein morphologischer Prozess, bei dem Laute, Silben, Wörter oder Wortteile wiederholt werden, indem man einen bestimmten Teil bzw. eine Lautkette des Basiswortes kopiert, dieses Reduplikat wieder mit der Basis verbindet und somit die abgeleitete Form der Basis bildet. Man unterscheidet zwischen partieller und totaler Reduplikation, je nachdem, ob nur ein Teil der Basis oder das komplette Wort verdoppelt wird. In den meisten Sprachen der Welt ist diese Methodik gebräuchlich, unter anderem um Formen der Vergangenheit, des Plurals, des Diminutivs etc. zu bilden (Flexion). Sie wird aber auch in der Wortbildung für die Entwicklung neuer Wörter genutzt.
