reference work

A reference work is a book or periodical (or its electronic equivalent) to which one can refer for confirmed facts. The information is intended to be found quickly when needed. Reference works are usually referred to for particular pieces of information, rather than read beginning to end. The writing style used in these works is informative; the authors avoid use of the first person, and emphasize facts. Many reference works are compiled by a team of contributors whose work is coordinated by one or more editors rather than by an individual author. Indices are commonly provided in many types of reference work. Updated editions are usually published as needed, in some cases annually (e.g. Whitaker's Almanack, Who's Who). Reference works include dictionaries, thesauruses, encyclopedias, almanacs, bibliographies, and catalogs (e.g. catalogs of libraries, museums or the works of individual artists). Many reference works are available in electronic form and can be obtained as application software, CD-ROMs, DVDs, or online through the Internet.

Ein Nachschlagewerk ist ein Buch oder ähnliches Werk, das schnellen Zugang zu Wissen liefert. Reine Datenbanken und vergleichbare Datensammlungen (wie Telefonbücher) werden in der Regel nicht zu den Nachschlagewerken gezählt.

Een naslagwerk is een boek(enreeks) of een digitaal instrument waarin een professionele onderzoeker of amateuristische informatiezoeker snel specifieke informatie kan vinden. De info is alfabetisch of thematisch gerangschikt. Sommige naslagwerken zijn specialistisch (zoals een medisch of biografisch woordenboek, een Bijbelconcordantie, een historische atlas of een adelsboek) en voor professionelen. Andere zijn generalistisch (een atlas, een Encyclopedie, een Onomasticon, een Vademecum of een Woordenboek) en gebruiksvriendelijk voor iedereen. Een synoniem voor naslagwerk is secundaire literatuur.

Livre de référence est un terme générique décrivant tout livre, petit ou gros, ayant pour but d'enseigner ou de renseigner. La création d'ouvrages de référence d'un nouveau type, comme les concordanciers ou les ouvrages collaboratifs, est maintenant rendue possible grâce à Internet. La distinction entre les livres à lecture séquentielle qu'englobe la littérature et ses multiples genres et les ouvrages de référence est entre autres que dans le premier cas, contrairement au second, la lecture se fait du début à la fin. On trouve cependant certaines exceptions, comme les manuels d'histoire. On parle d'édition de référence à propos de l'édition scientifique considérée comme la meilleure, pour les ouvrages de littérature ancienne, moderne et contemporaine. Dans ce cas la différenciation se fait par rapport aux autres éditions du même texte pouvant exister.
