A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the barrel walls. The raised areas of the rifling are called "lands," which make contact with the projectile (for small arms usage, called a bullet), imparting spin around an axis corresponding to the orientation of the weapon. When the projectile leaves the barrel, this spin lends gyroscopic stability to the projectile and prevents tumbling, in the same way that a properly thrown American football or rugby ball behaves. This allows the use of aerodynamically-efficient pointed bullets (as opposed to the spherical balls used in muskets) and thus improves range and accuracy. The word "rifle" originally referred to the grooving, and a rifle was called a "rifled gun." Rifles are used in warfare, hunting and shooting sports.

Als Büchse bezeichnet man ein Jagd- oder Sportgewehr mit gezogenem Lauf. Dieser hat im Inneren Züge und Felder, welche durch Längsrillen entstehen, die bei der Herstellung in den Lauf gezogen werden. Die über die Lauflänge gedrehten Züge verleihen dem Projektil einen Drall, der die Geschossflugbahn stabilisiert. Eine Flinte hat dagegen einen glatten Lauf für die Verwendung von Flintenmunition (Schrotkugeln).

Rifle es un término de origen anglosajón (rifle, estría) con el que se designa genéricamente a cualquier arma larga, como fusiles o carabinas (ya sean de avancarga, de retrocarga, de palanca, de cerrojo, semiautomática o de asalto), que dispone de un cañón cuya  ánima está rayada o estriada en forma helicoidal. Con ello se obliga a que la bala gire con movimiento de rotación mientras avanza por el interior del cañón. Así se consigue que la bala se estabilice y mantenga su trayectoria inicial frente al posible viento lateral cuando atraviesa el aire después del disparo. Precisamente, este giro es el responsable de que, al chocar la bala contra un blanco duro y resistente al final de su trayectoria, se deforme produciendo un silbido característico tras alterarse su forma aerodinámica.
