Rights are legal, social, or ethical principles of freedom or entitlement; that is, rights are the fundamental normative rules about what is allowed of people or owed to people, according to some legal system, social convention, or ethical theory. Rights are of essential importance in such disciplines as law and ethics, especially theories of justice and deontology. Rights are often considered fundamental to civilization, being regarded as established pillars of society and culture, and the history of social conflicts can be found in the history of each right and its development. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "rights structure the form of governments, the content of laws, and the shape of morality as it is currently perceived."

Eine Rechtsordnung ist nicht ein Gefüge „abstrakter“, vom Leben abgelöster Normen, sondern als geltendes Recht ein Gefüge „wirksamer“ Normen, die hinreichende Motivationskraft (notfalls auch Durchsetzungschancen) besitzen, das von ihnen vorgesehene Verhalten zu „bewirken“, kurz, Recht ist law in action, das durch menschliches Handeln „zur Geltung gebracht“ wird und sich hierbei in die Lebenswirklichkeit der jeweiligen Kultur und deren Zeitgeist fügt.

Het recht is een systeem van regels waarmee de mens de samenleving ordent. In het recht staat wat je wel en wat je niet mag doen. Soms staat er ook in op welke manier je iets moet doen. Sommige regels zijn opgeschreven in wetten. Het recht ligt steeds vervat in een rechtsbron. Het recht kan worden onderverdeeld in verschillende disciplines, rechtstakken genoemd. De verschillende rechtstakken maken meestal het voorwerp uit van een aparte studieonderdeel in de Rechtenopleidingen aan de universiteiten, maar hangen allemaal samen.
