A sail is a catchment device designed to receive and redirect a force upon a generous surface area. Traditionally, the surface was engineered of woven fabric and supported by a mast, whose purpose is to propel a sailing vessel. Sails may be configured in many ways to include traditionally understood maritime purposes, as well as land vehicles and solar collection purposes. Ein Segel (von althochdeutsch segal: abgeschnittenes Tuchstück) ist ein Tuch, das dem Antrieb von Segelfahrzeugen durch den Wind dient.

Een zeil is een doek op een schip dat bedoeld is om de kracht van de wind te vangen en om te zetten in een voortstuwende kracht voor het schip. De stand van het zeil ten opzichte van het schip is vaak verstelbaar, zodat ondanks verschillende invalshoeken van de wind toch een efficiënte voortstuwing kan worden verkregen.

Une voile est une pièce de tissu, dont la taille peut varier de quelques mètres carrés à plusieurs centaines de mètres carrés, qui, grâce à l'action du vent, sert à faire avancer un véhicule. Les voiles sont utilisées sur des voiliers, planches à voile, mais aussi sur des véhicules terrestres (chars à voiles, voile sur glace).

Żagiel – rodzaj pędnika wiatrowego stosowanego do napędów żaglowców, jachtów, bojerów, żaglowozów itd. Jest to odpowiednio ukształtowany płat tkaniny (ew. innego tworzywa) rozpięty na omasztowaniu jednostek żaglowych, stawiany fałami, a kierowany szotami lub brasami (wszystko najczęściej przy użyciu wielu lin pomocniczych). Zespół żagli tworzy ożaglowanie jednostki i służy do napędzania jej. Pierwotnie żagle były szyte z brytów tkaniny (bawełna, dacron, nylon, kevlar), obecnie stosuje się też inne metody wytwarzania żagli (laminowanie, klejenie). Żagle podzielić można według kształtu, abstrahując od rodzaju ożaglowania, na trójkątne i czworokątne.
