A salary is a form of periodic payment from an employer to an employee, which may be specified in an employment contract. It is contrasted with piece wages, where each job, hour or other unit is paid separately, rather than on a periodic basis. From the point of view of running a business, salary can also be viewed as the cost of acquiring and retaining human resources for running operations, and is then termed personnel expense or salary expense. In accounting, salaries are recorded in payroll accounts.

Arbeitsentgelt ist – neben der Erfüllung weiterer Pflichten – die wesentliche Gegenleistung, die ein Arbeitgeber einem Arbeitnehmer für seine Arbeitsleistung aufgrund eines Arbeitsvertrages schuldet. Entgelt ist eine nominalisierte Form von „entgelten“, was so viel heißt wie „vergüten“. Innerhalb der Schweiz, ansonsten selten, wird der Begriff Salär oder Entlöhnung für eine geldwerte Entlohnung verwendet.

Arbeidsloon (ook vaak loon, salaris, maandgeld of traktement) is de (meestal financiële) tegenprestatie voor arbeid. Loon wordt betaald door de werkgever aan de werknemer, die arbeid verricht voor de werkgever.

Le salaire est un revenu qui est payé à la force de travail. La force de travail est employée un certain temps pour réaliser une certaine quantité de travail. Le salaire peut être payé en argent, en nature et sous d'autres formes, en particulier sous forme d'assurances (chômage notamment, via les cotisations). Mais au bout du compte, le salaire correspond toujours à une certaine quantité de marchandises et de services marchands. C'est le salaire réel. Pour comparer les salaires réels entre eux, on doit mesurer le pouvoir d'achat réel du salaire nominal, c'est-à-dire tenir compte du niveau des prix des marchandises de consommation.

Le salariat est un mode d'organisation du travail qui repose sur la fourniture d’une prestation par une personne, contre rémunération et sous lien de subordination juridique avec un employeur.

Płaca (pensja, wynagrodzenie, zapłata, gratyfikacja) – wypłaty pieniężne oraz wartość tzw. świadczeń w naturze (towary, materiały, usługi itp.) lub ekwiwalenty wypłacane pracownikom lub innym osobom fizycznym przez pracodawcę za wykonaną na jego rzecz pracę.
