Sedimentation is the tendency for particles in suspension to settle out of the fluid in which they are entrained and come to rest against a barrier. This is due to their motion through the fluid in response to the forces acting on them: these forces can be due to gravity, centrifugal acceleration, or electromagnetism. In geology, sedimentation is often used as the opposite of erosion, i.e., the terminal end of sediment transport. In that sense, it includes the termination of transport by saltation or true bedload transport. Settling is the falling of suspended particles through the liquid, whereas sedimentation is the termination of the settling process.

Sedimentation bzw. Sedimentierung (von lat. sedimentum = Bodensatz) ist das Ablagern von Teilchen aus Flüssigkeiten oder Gasen unter dem Einfluss der Gewichtskraft oder der Zentrifugalkraft. Bildet sich zuunterst eine Schicht von Schwebstoffen, so nennt man diese Bodensatz, Sediment oder (um Verwechslungen mit Sedimentgestein auszuschließen) Lockersediment (Lockergestein).

La sédimentation est un processus dans lequel des particules de matière quelconque cessent progressivement de se déplacer et se réunissent en couches. Les facteurs induisant la sédimentation peuvent être variés en nombre et en proportion. Ordinairement la mécanique des fluides joue un rôle prépondérant, ainsi la sédimentation est-elle accrue dans les zones d'hydrodynamisme atténué, de même que les paramètres de viscosité interfèrent avec celles d'agglomération mécanique des particules. La granulométrie des particules en mouvement intervient également fortement dans la forme prise par le phénomène.

La sedimentazione in fisica è un processo per cui particelle sospese in un fluido si accumulano a causa dell'esistenza di un campo di forza. Questo può essere provocato dalla forza di gravità (sedimentazione per gravità o decantazione), dalla forza centrifuga (sedimentazione centrifuga), o dalla forza elettrica (elettrodecantazione, elettroforesi, dielettroforesi).

Sedymentacja (łac. sedimentum = osad) – proces opadania zawiesiny ciała stałego w cieczy w wyniku działania siły grawitacji lub sił bezwładności. Sedymentacji ulegają zawiesiny o gęstości większej niż gęstość cieczy. Sedymentacja prowadzi więc do rozdziału substancji niejednorodnych, a kryterium podziału jest gęstość.
