In a sensory system, a sensory receptor is a sensory nerve ending that responds to a stimulus in the internal or external environment of an organism. In response to stimuli, the sensory receptor initiates sensory transduction by creating graded potentials or action potentials in the same cell or in an adjacent one.

Dans un système sensoriel, un récepteur sensoriel est une structure capable d'être activée par un stimulus dans l'environnement interne ou externe d'un organisme vivant. En réponse à ce stimulus, le récepteur peut amorcer une transduction par potentiel électrochimique ou potentiel d'action sur la même cellule ou sur une cellule adjacente.
