A signature (; from , "to sign") is a handwritten (and often stylized) depiction of someone's name, nickname, or even a simple "X" or other mark that a person writes on documents as a proof of identity and intent. The writer of a signature is a signatory or signer. Similar to a handwritten signature, a signature work describes the work as readily identifying its creator. A signature may be confused with an autograph, which is chiefly an artistic signature. This can lead to confusion when people have both an autograph and signature and as such some people in the public eye keep their signatures private whilst fully publishing their autograph.

Unterschrift (auch Signatur, von lateinisch signatum „das Gezeichnete“ zu signum „Zeichen“) ist die handschriftliche, eigenhändige Namenszeichnung auf Schriftstücken durch eine natürliche Person mit mindestens dem Familiennamen. Die Unterschriftsleistung ist zur Gültigkeit von Rechtsgeschäften, die mindestens der Schriftform bedürfen, erforderlich. „Unter-schrift” ist eine Lehnübersetzung zum lateinischen sub-scriptio zu sub „unter” und scribere „schreiben“.

Une signature est une marque permettant d'identifier l'auteur d'un document, d'une œuvre ou la cause d'un phénomène : ainsi un auteur signe ses écrits. Une signature peut aussi être apposée à la fin d'un document par une personne pour signifier son approbation de l'ensemble des informations contenues dans un document dont il n'est pas forcément l'auteur. C'est ainsi le cas des contrats ou de tout document commercial signé par tout un chacun.

Podpis – językowy znak graficzny utrwalony w dokumencie własnoręcznie postawiony przez składającego, świadczenie wskazuje imię i nazwisko podpisującego, a jeżeli jego identyfikacji można dokonać w inny sposób (np. karta wzorów podpisów) – dopuszczalna jest forma skrócona.

Podpis (nekdy také signatura z latinského signare – oznacovat) je rucne psané a casto stylizované vypsání jména nebo jiného identifikacního znaku (prezdívky, erbu, monogramu) osoby, která podpis napsala. Zkrácený podpis osoby pak nazýváme slovem parafa.
